Wild Bird by Wendelin Van Draanen

Wild Bird

Characters: Wren Clemens, Mo her little brother, Anabella her older sister, Wren’s parents, Meadow a friend from school, Nico,  a not-so-friend from school, Hannah a friend in the wilderness camp.

Wren is forced out of bed in the early morning hours to a waiting car which takes her to the airport and off to a wilderness camp. Why? Because she has become more than her parents can handle.

Recently moved to a new town and school, Wren is angry. At everyone. She meets Meadow who introduces her to Nico and a major wrong turn has happened in her life. As she becomes deeper involved with these two school mates, her grades fall, she becomes more belligerent at home, hating all who come in contact with her. Her parents try many avenues of help without any positive results. Finally they send her to a special wilderness camp.

The wilderness camp provides the setting for Wren to finally confront herself and find a new direction for her life.

I, a senior in the way of life, found the story an encouragement to choose friends wisely. It does not matter the age one is, friends are important and a good friend is priceless and essential.
