1000 Books Before Kindergarten
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nation wide program sponsored by libraries to encourage parents and family to read to young children. There is no cost to parents. Our library encourages parents to sign up their child(ren) with the librarian, who will then provide record sheets for you to write down titles of books read to the child. When you have filled a record sheet with 100 books, you may turn in the sheet for a free book to add to your private library and opportunity for a picture of child and book to be added to bulletin board in Church Parlors. You will then receive another record sheet for the next 100 books. When a child reaches 1000 books they receive a commemorative tshirt and a picture to celebrate. The big reward is the child has a headstart on reading. It has been proven that children who are read to and interact with books at a young age will have greater success in school and reading in general. A side benefit is the bond that parent and child develop during the reading of the many books. This is irreplaceable and the true goal of the program.
I encourage all students and parents currently in the program who have not been able to visit the library to still keep the records and as soon as we are able to be open, bring in the sheets to receive your free books and get our pictures up to date. I am extending the deadline for the 5K students to the end of the year to turn in record sheets to hopefully reach 1000 books.
